Mercedes Schlapp, the White House communication strategist, is a difficult job. As White House's Strategist Communications Advisor Mercedes Schlapp faces a myriad of problems. A president can be the director of his own communications. Multiple legal cases that may affect messaging strategies. And Cabinet Secretaries who have been involved in problems. Schlapp, however, has never lost focus on her role. She works closely in conjunction with White House political affairs and committees on legislation along with policy shops as well as the larger communications operation in order to ensure that the policies are implemented. In her current role she's focused on a variety of topics, including safety at schools and opioids. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters much in her current role. In March, she garnered lots of attention from the media when her name was mentioned as a possible candidate to succeed Hope Hicks in the role of communications director. Mercedes Schlapp's position as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy task. Mercedes Schlapp is faced with an administration that is plagued by various concerns, which includes a president acting as the president's own communications director as well as Cabinet Secretaries that are involved in controversies of their own. Schlapp has never strayed from her mission, and has worked closely in conjunction with White House policy and political teams. So far, her focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids and infrastructure, and trade. She doesn't interact with reporters very much in her present position. But she drew a burst of interest in March, after her name was suggested as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. The battle has been brutal. Schlapp's allies fought with Tony Sayegh on the news. Schlapp said that after that the Washington Examiner had published an article that had negative reviews of Sayegh's character, she called Sayegh to have a private discussion.
